Matanuska-Susitna Borough issued the following announcement on April 2.
We've had a few folks question whether the April 1 start to the Alaska wildland fire season and the statewide burn permit requirement is an April Fool's Day joke, especially people living in the northern half of the state, where 3 feet of ice is still covering the ground.
That may be the case up north but some Areas in Southcentral Alaska are starting to become snow-free. As anyone who has lived in Alaska for any length of time knows, things can change quickly and once the snow melts and that dead, dry grass is exposed, all it takes is a spark to ignite it.
To illustrate our point, here's a picture was taken looking out the window of the Mat-Su Area Forestry office in Palmer yesterday.
Get a burn permit online at https://dnr.alaska.gov/burn or pick one up at your local forestry office or at your local fire department.
