Mat-Su Borough Bike and Pedestrian Plan
Description
The Matanuska-Susitna Borough (MSB) is the fastest growing area within the state over the last 20 years. By 2045, the MSB population is expected to grow by 61%. In recent years, 20% of all roadway fatalities in Alaska involve nonmotorized users. As the fastest-growing region of the state, the MSB needs a comprehensive Bike and Pedestrian Plan (BPP) to address ongoing safety issues, identify and fill key infrastructure gaps, and improve the accessibility of the Valley’s non-motorized transportation network for all users.
Purpose and Scope
At roughly 23,000 square miles, the MSB is comparably the same size as West Virginia. The MSB has several “urbanized” city centers which include Palmer, Wasilla, Talkeetna, Houston, Sutton, and Willow. The purpose of this project is identify gaps in the existing Bike and Pedestrian network not only within the urbanized centers but also connections where possible and develop an implementation plan.
Goals
- Inventory and document the bike and pedestrian network to identify gaps and deficiencies
- Review codes and policies to identify potential changes that will help implement the plan’s recommendations
- Create a prioritized list of projects to start building out the bike and pedestrian network
- Solicit public input on the plan’s goals, vision, findings, and recommendations
- Identify funding mechanisms to help implement the plan’s recommendations.
