The Alaska Division of Forestry Mat-Su Area is issuing a #BurnPermitSuspension effective Saturday morning, May 21 at 6:00 am. Learn about the Burn Permit Program here https://dnr.alaska.gov/burn. This includes Mat-Su Core, East, West, and North areas. A burn permit suspension temporarily prohibits ALL burn permits, both small- and large-scale. Absolutely no burning of burn barrels, debris piles, or lawns.
If you have burned recently, check the ashes as any abandoned heat sources have an increased likelihood of igniting accidental wildfires.
Due to the warm temperatures and quite dry conditions, much of the area has become highly susceptible to debris burns escaping and spreading from their intended area. Weather forecasts cooler temperatures and an increased relative humidity (RH) on Sunday but point out that the RH for the Susitna Valley will still be lower than surrounding areas.
Small campfires less than 3-feet in diameter are still allowed but must be in an area with a sufficient fuel break, water nearby, and in attendance until full extinguishment.
