As of 9:00 am June 9th 2022, #BurnPermitSuspensions have been lifted from the Mat-Su area. For the Palmer and Wasilla area, the fire danger has been reduced to Moderate. Alaska Division of Forestry would like to thank the public for overall cooperation with limiting burning during the period of suspension. A relatively small number of human-caused fires during the suspension allowed sufficient firefighting response to limit fire growth and prevent significant damage.
Please remember, although #burnpermits are no longer suspended specifically for the Mat-Su area, hot and dry conditions still persist throughout much of Alaska. Check with your local area for information on burn permit status.
Due to current and expected fire activity, the Preparedness Level for the state of Alaska was elevated to PL 3 as of June 8th. According to the Alaska Interagency Mobilization Guide, PL 3 means: Multiple areas experiencing fire starts and/or one project fire. Probability of ignition is high, burning conditions of moderate to high in all fuel (vegetation) types. Resistance to control is moderate to high, resistance to extinguishment is moderate. Up to 50% of non-tactical resources being mobilized, up to 75% of tactical resources committed to new ignitions. Existing weather pattern supporting fire activity is forecasted to remain for the next 48 hours.
The Western and Southwestern areas of Alaska are experiencing #RedFlagWarnings today June 9th 2022, and any wildfire that starts in these areas has the potential to become large and destructive.
While burn permit suspensions have been lifted for the Mat-Su area, please still practice safe burning. Firefighting resources are in high demand across the state, with more resources from Yukon, Oregon and Washington arriving in the coming days to assist with firefighting efforts.
