Talkeetna Youth Hockey Association (TYHA) and Talkeetna Elementary are looking forward to offering hockey to our community's children again this winter!Practices, open to students aged 5-12 years, will focus on skills and drills, and scrimmaging will be introduced when skater skills allow.  Full hockey gear will be required of all skaters this year, including a helmet with metal face cage, chest/shoulder pads, mouthguard (provided by TYHA to all skaters with registration), elbow pads, gloves, hockey shorts, knee/shin pads, skates, and hockey socks.  Snow pants may be worn over leg pads in place of hockey socks.  K-2 skaters may wear mittens and/or warm gloves in place of hockey gloves.  A water bottle with long straw will also be provided by TYHA to all skaters with registration.  Gear is available to rent from TYHA for $50 on a first-come, first-served basis.

The TYHA hockey shack will be OPEN with gearing up/down this year and a parent or designated adult must be present at the beginning of practice to help each child put their gear on and lace up their skates.  If a child is younger than 1st grade, has special needs or is brand new to skating an adult must remain at the rink during practice. It is helpful to arrive at least 10-15 minutes early (depending on the number of children needing assistance) because getting geared up takes a lot of time and all participants should be ready to skate and on the ice before practice starts.  Using the restroom before putting on gear is always a good idea.  The Association has rented two portable toilets that can be used before and during practices.  It is important to be prepared for cold weather.  Skull caps/beanies that fit comfortably under a helmet and neck gaiters are great for all ages.  Stretch knit glove liners work well under hockey gloves for extra warmth.
